Well, here it is, our first blog entry! We have been trying to decide what we wanted to write about for our first blog entry, but it seems like there are so many things going on right now, so it’s hard to narrow our subject down to just one! Finally we’ve decided our first blog will be about the 4th of July in Bar Harbor. We know that this area is very popular during the summer, but the celebrations on the 4th seem to start it all off, and do so with a BANG!
Here is what you can find in Bar Harbor on Independence Day:
This is put on by the MDI Rotary Club at the Bar Harbor Athletic Field, also known locally as the ‘ball field’. This is on Park Street, near the YMCA. You can have blueberry or plain pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee. This is a true morning feast that the whole family can enjoy. Come early to make sure you are done eating in time to watch the parade!
After enjoying a lovely breakfast at the ball field, you can wander across the street to the MDI YMCA, where they are hosting a craft fair featuring a wonderful selection of Maine crafts, including jewelry, quilts, photographs, pottery and porcelain dolls. This fair is an annual fundraiser for the YMCA and the YWCA.
The community of Bar Harbor shows off its patriotism and good humor with a large parade that begins on Main Street down near the ball field at 10am. It slowly works its way down Main street, turns left onto Cottage Street, and it goes right by the front of our Inn! From there it turns left onto Route 3 up to Mount Desert Street, then turns down Ledgelawn Avenue and ends at the intersection of Park Street. We recommend finding a place anywhere along Cottage Street to view the parade, and make sure your children have bags or pails to hold all the candy that the floats and parade participants will be throwing!
Shortly after the parade, you can find MDI Rotary Club’s Seafood Festival. This is also at the Bar Harbor Athletic field on Park Street. Come early to enjoy the lobsters, mussels, corn, strawberry shortcake and more! This event also includes the MDI YMCA Annual Lobster Races! Watch the excitement as local businesses put their lobsters to the test in this high-speed crustacean contest. Proceeds benefit the MDI YMCA. For more information, you can contact 288-3511, email@example.com or visit www.mdiymca.org
Bring your family down to the Village Green for a free concert put on by the Bar Harbor Town Band. This is located on the corner of Main and Mt. Desert Streets and is a fun time for both children and adults.
Brass Venture, one of the most dynamic chamber ensembles on the stage today, will perform for crowds as they gather in Agamont Park, which overlooks the pier. The Concert will be led by Conductor, Francis Fortier of the Bar Harbor Music Festival. You may find that getting there early is necessary to finding a spot on the grass; this park tends to fill up early on in the day with folks waiting to hear this concert and watch the fireworks.
Every year the fireworks seem to get better, and this year will be no exception! For the first time, Brass Venture will be playing Handel's Fireworks during the explosive display of fireworks that will be shot off over the pier. Enjoy the spectacular display on the waterfront in downtown as Independence Day draws to a close.
With so much to do on the 4th in Bar Harbor, we don't expect anyone will be bored! The excitement in town is palpable, and we hope you'll be joining us for this exciting time in Bar Harbor. Contact us today for reservations, we still have a few availabilities left!
